When I first started sharing Power Acronyms in the summer of 2022 I would occasionally line up an acronym with a holiday, if I happened to have one that was relevant.
Today is President’s Day, so let’s explore the semantics of F.L.A.G.!
Flags hang proudly in manufacturing facilities and are emblazoned on clothing as unifying symbols of the values we hold dear every day of the year.
As someone who appreciates symbols, stories, and meaning, I love the way flags can be used to express personal and shared identity.
Power Acronym 50: F.L.A.G.
Family
Flags were first used to identify members of a certain military or noble rank. Eventually, as power was organized into nations, flags were used to represent what nation an individual belonged to.
Flags start with the people. The people are who give meaning to the colors and shapes of their flag through the sharing of common stories, values and beliefs.
Legacy
As much as flags serve as symbols for what a group of people stand for now, they are often informed by the history of the place it represents. As families and nations evolve, the flags that represent them evolve.
These changes become touchstones over time as new generations analyze their pasts and look toward the future.
Allegiance
The enduring commitment to what the flag stands for and being loyal to it.
It is not hard to look at America’s political climate today and find division.
It’s easy to become jaded by politics and convinced that half the country hates the other.
It takes courage and loyalty to continue believing that our country is worth believing in and that nobody in America is better than anyone else because we’re all equally fortunate to have the opportunity to live here.

Growth
When I think of a flag, the image of someone planting one as an act of conquest comes to mind.
There was a time when the world was largely about that.
Now that national borders don’t move as much, planting your flag has more to do with making a mark of a different kind.
What difference are you making?
…at home?
…at work?
…in life?
Does it look like growth? Or civil war?
